Satellite detections
NASA FIRMS (VIIRS/MODIS satellites), updated roughly every 30 minutes for Europe. A heat source is not a confirmed fire — it can also be industry, agricultural burning or another heat source.
Filtering
Heat sources that keep returning in the same place (such as factories) are recognised automatically and marked separately, as are areas where wildfires are geographically not at issue — both are display filters you can switch on, nothing is removed from the data.
Verification
For Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Greece, persistent heat sources are automatically clustered into an event and checked against current reporting; the result (wildfire / agricultural / industrial / other) appears as a badge on the report, with attribution.
Official reports
Where available we also show official fire registers and emergency-plan statuses from governments, summarised in our own words per language — never copied verbatim — always with source and timestamp.
